Because they have been trying to destroy the Downtown Eastside since 1913

Credit Check

- 4 The VPD killed a man with a taser at the airport the other day. “Shit! I thought I told you guys to set tasers to stun, not heart attack! (CORRECTION: It was the RCMP… dammit)

+15 The three month strike has finally come to an end!

- 7 The city of Vancouver has actually conjured up a really unique and effective way to combat the mini-depression occurring around the Canada Line construction: A website!

- 3 Albertans — the citizens of the richest province in BC — are also the least happy. Excellent. Thank God the guy who used to be in charge of a bunch of you guys you guys is now in charge of the entire country. (CORRECTION: !!!!!)

- 4 Who should have really won the Nobel Peace Prize? Why, obviously General Petraeus

- 1 Here’s some free advice: If you ever plan on being a successful prostitute, don’t advertise the fact that you’ve had four crack induced heart attacks.

As much as I love ragging on the vpd, perhaps you should say that it was really the Richmond R.C.M.P who are a little trigger happy when not riding hoses at the agrodome. cause equestrian jokes are where its at

  2. Coolier Than Thou

As a news source for us disenfranchised, hip 20 and thirty-somethings, I think Only has an obligation to its readers to inform as well as entertain with the irreverent and humourous jibes. Your readership are probably not totally immersed in many of the more banal current events.

In the above Credit Check, the suggestion is made that the RAV line developers have just now decided to react to the problems accompanying their construction. In no way am I suggesting that this is enough or the proper way to go about it, but the shoptheline website is a few years old. The downtown Granville district (the one that I work in) has had a fairly aggressive marketing campaign encouraging people to shop the local merchants despite the disruptive construction. There is also a site set up to inform people about the development and disruptions in addition to the office located at 16th and Cambie. This: “The city of Vancouver as (sic – also a sic on attributing this to the City – it’s not them, it’s the numerous neighbourhood business associations responsible for this program) actually conjured up a really unique and effective way to combat the mini-depression occurring around the Canada Line construction: A website!” suggests that this is the first mitigation measure enacted. It’s not, although again, I’m not suggesting that anyone involved in this has done a good job, I’m just saying you might want to credit what efforts have been done more accurately (and maybe even critique/mock them?).

Secondly, in the above, you reference Steven Harper as being “in charge of” Albertans. This suggests that he was their Premier at some point. He never has been. To the best of my knowledge, Harper has always been a federal politician, with a constituency limited to part of Calgary.

In a world where, on the one side, news is degraded to celebrity culture, and on the other lampooned by shows like the Daily Show (where a large number of Only’s demographic get their info on political and world events), a publication like Only serves as a welcome informational source to those who may otherwise go largely uninformed due to distrust or disinterest. Only has made it part of its coverage to ridicule the shoddy journalism performed by the mainstream press, so it is disappointing that it would be so lazy and flippant with its own.

Yeah! Damn lazy flippant Only… oh wait, that’s exactly how Only is ALL THE TIME (in a humorous, jibey sort of way).

    Heather:

You are an idiot. I used to live in Richmond, and I can attest to the fact that ANY of the RCMP in Canada (yes, even in Richmond, BC!) are THE MOST RESPECTED AND HIGHLY TRAINED POLICE FORCE GOING. Period. It’s good that you remember the Musical Ride- that is a Canadian tradition going back to the origins of the RCMP- and the origins of Canada- YOU. So, the next time you want to rag on the police, remember this: The RCMP are world remowned. They are respected, even in places you might not know about…the Mounties are the wall between us, and the bad guys- they are brave and stand in harm’s way when we cannot. Also, regional police forces don’t get attendees to their funerals that include foreign police forces. Mounties do.

Oh, and isofar as the p### that got arrested for the murder of the NWT constable….I do hope you get a fair trial…too bad we abolished the death penalty- to kill a cop is one of only a few crimes that we should still have the death penalty for…

It would definately slow down the loss of the Red Serge…

Re: The guy who got Tasered at the airport…I’m surprised that the bugger didn’t get shot. Considering the terrorist threats happening every day (and as much as we don’t want to admit it, yes, gentle readers..the threat is VERY VERY real!), I would have thought that a nice little 9mm through the forehead would have been quicker….meh, what do I know….

    Peace

“Peace”?! How the fuck can you sign off “peace” after leaving that vitriolic, hate-ridden comment?

    To quote you:

    You are an idiot.
